“The band that is going to save the Radio,” says producer/mc S.C. Xenakis. The Republic of Apes is an eclectic musical group focused on upsetting the mediocracy of popular music. Not sure if you’d consider their music Hip Hop, but after a quick listen to their track, Hero (of Alexandria), it’s influence certainly can’t be denied. The band’s combination of distinct musical influences is  refreshing and exciting.

Xenakis claims he hails from the “darkside of music,” behind the mixing consoles, synthesizers and samplers that spawned Rap and House records. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Andrew Doyle, is deeply rooted in, but not a afraid to veer from, 90’s alternative rock and punk.

Lex Doyle, the band’s secret weapon, successfully delivers captivating flute solos and supporting folk harmonies that effectively tie the crude raps of Xenakis, together with the Clapton-chops of Michael Bordino, the band’s lead guitarist.

A menacing Dennis Sedita, thunders from behind a drum kit ripping in and out of funk grooves and heavy metal builds.

During a session with the ROA, Andrew Doyle says with conviction  that he is “in it for the originality.” But just what sets this group apart from any other “Rap-Rock” collaborations we’ve heard in the past. Bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, endured short-lived success but, in doing so, might have exhausted the market already.

“We’re approaching it different than them.” says Xenakis “This thing is about making something new rather than trying to scream rap verses over guitars” The ROA is “an experimental band,” who isn’t “limited to producing shit that necessarily fits into any one genre.”

The band is still coming up and will be playing throughout their hometown, NYC, all throughout next year. Also they are preparing to shoot, edit and self-produce a few homemade music videos, with hopes of articulating the heavier concepts of their music.
